Who we are

Metamorphosis Mental Health, PLLC, was founded in 2024 when Kayla and Thomas (Tom) Ulsby discussed the need for mental health services in their area. As a married couple working in helping professions, they saw the need to create a business that could provide advocacy and educational services to St. Paul, the Twin Cities, and Minnesota.

Kayla attended St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN, for her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, specializing in immigrant and refugee mental health. She graduated in May of 2020 and began working in the Twin Cities. Kayla sees the need for quality care for populations that have historically been underserved, including in many of her own identities. She is a fluent Spanish speaker and knows the value of providing services in a person's native language. Kayla provides therapy, immigration evaluations, and supervision and consultation.

Tom attended University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, for his Master of Science (MS) degree in global health, specifically studying diabetic care practices and interventions globally, and Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN for his Master in Nursing (MSN). Tom currently assists with administrative tasks at Metamorphosis.

When they are not working, Kayla and Tom love spending time with their family and pets, trying new foods, and getting outdoors.

Our Name

The butterfly is a symbol for many things, but to us, it symbolizes change and transformation. Specifically, the Monarch Butterly migrates from the northern parts of the United States to the south of Mexico every year. These creatures make huge journeys across a large part of the world. As providers that serve clients who have migrated themselves, we see the parallels between a person's journey and a butterfly's journey. Whether you have physically moved to a new place, or are going through a process of change in your life (metamorphosis), we are here to support and partner with you.
